At least one industrial building exists on Xen, which contains lights, elevators, conveyor belts, pistons, force fields, and more. Some homes on Xen are seen, although they are not luxurious and are very simply made. They have colonized and taken over the planet, and preserved certain species from their world. Many of the creatures in Xen have fled their homeworlds due to the Combine's takeover of their planet, notably the Vortigaunt and Nihilanth. There are some trees on the planet which are alive, and will attack anyone who gets near them. The Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU) is sent in to kill anything and everything remaining, while the Black Ops are sent in to arm a nuclear device. An interesting property of Xen is that the asteroids are actually slowly falling down onto its surface, so gravity is directed strongly downwards. Because it is so high up, the gravity is significantly lower than on Earth's. Xen is an ocean planet of 7 Earth masses with no solid surface, however, near the very top of its atmosphere, many floating asteroids are present, which is where all of its population lives. Some other species, including the Alien Controller, Alien Grunt, Headcrab, Vortigaunt, Barnacle, Houndeye, Bullsquid, Tentacle, also fled here for unknown reasons.
